Maldives ITD requirements

IMUGA Application

Before you travel to the Maldives, it’s important to be aware of local entry requirements. Most visitors do not require a visa in advance, but you must apply online for an International Travel Declaration (ITD).

On this page, you’ll find all the details on what you need to prepare, including what you need to get an approved Maldives Traveller form, and other requirements.

Required documents for the Maldives IMUGA

To meet the Maldives Travel Declaration requirements, you’ll need the following information to hand while filling out your form:

Personal details Contact information Passport data Trip details

Name

Date of birth

Country of residence

Cell phone number

Email address

Country of issue

Issue and expiry dates

Passport number

Reason for your trip

Make sure to enter your passport details carefully. The information on your passport matches your approved ITD, also known as the IMUGA form.

Once you completed your ITD application for Maldives, you’ll be asked to pay by debit or credit card. The payment window is active for 10 minutes, so it’s best to have your card information ready.

Customs and security declaration

The final part of the ITD form includes questions relating to Maldivian customs and security rules. You’re asked to declare any travel through yellow fever-endemic countries in the 6 days prior to your arrival in the Maldives.

If you’re planning to carry any of the following items, you must declare this on your ITD:

Prohibited items Restricted items

Alcohol

Drugs

Pork products

Pornography

Religious materials for distribution

Cash over EUR 9,000, or equivalent in another currency

If you’re carrying prescription medication, you’re recommended to bring only as much as you’ll need during your stay, along with a doctor’s note or your prescription document.

Take note of the prohibited items listed above and avoid bringing them to the Maldives. If you carry any of these goods, you’ll likely face fines and confiscation when you arrive at border control.

Passport requirements for your trip to the Maldives

Your passport will be inspected on arrival in the Maldives. It must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival. If it’s due to expire soon, you’re recommended to renew it before you travel.

The passport details you enter in your Maldives Traveller Declaration must match the passport you travel with. If you’re renewing your passport, complete the ITD with your new passport data.

Do I need a visa to travel to the Maldives?

Most visitors do not need to arrange a visa before travelling to the Maldives. If you meet the general entry requirements, you’ll be granted a 30-day visa on arrival by a border official. There’s no additional charge for this visa and it’s valid for tourism and business visits.

To get the visa on arrival, you must show a valid passport, proof of accommodation, and a return or onward travel booking for your departure.

If you’re travelling to live, study, or work in the Maldives, you must get a visa in advance. Visit the official website of the Maldivian Immigration Service.

Return travel ticket requirements

Border officials may ask to see a return or onward travel booking to verify that you plan to leave the Maldives before your visa on arrival expires. You must show that you have intentions to depart before the 30-day period ends.

You can show immigration officers flight or ship tickets, or a booking or confirmation email, as evidence of your onward plans.

Funds to cover your stay and accommodation

During immigration checks, you might be asked to show that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in the Maldives.

There’s no fixed amount required, but you need to demonstrate that you’re able to pay for accommodation, meals, and other expenses. You could show:

  • Bank statements
  • Cash or credit cards
  • Hotel or resort booking

You should also have accommodation reservations ready to show border officials when you arrive. If you plan to move between different resorts in the Maldives, it’s best to have reservations for at least your first few nights.

If someone in the Maldives is covering your expenses, or has invited you to stay in their home, bring a sponsorship or invitation letter to evidence this.
